Start with the area and purpose

Ask about the material itself
“Screened” describes a processing step; it does not automatically establish that a soil meets every planting specification. If your project has particular growing requirements, discuss them with the appropriate landscaping or horticultural professional and share the material requirements when ordering.
Do not treat topsoil as a substitute for every type of fill. If the project involves deeper ground shaping or a prepared base, explain that work too. It may call for a separate earthworks discussion.
Decide how material will reach the work area
A truck’s unloading location and the place where you want the soil spread may be different. Identify gates, limited access, soft ground and overhead obstructions. Ask whether your enquiry is for supply only or also includes placement and related work.
Think about the sequence of the project. If another contractor is preparing the area, coordinate the intended delivery window before making arrangements. Avoid having material placed where later access or excavation will disturb it.
